Parent Handbook

Dear Lorraine Elementary Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! I am excited and honored to serve as Principal of Lorraine Elementary School as we celebrate 30 years of excellence, learning, and Lion Pride in Every Stride. Since opening in 1996, LES has built a proud legacy of student success, strong family partnerships, and a commitment to helping every child reach his/her fullest potential.

Our work will center on four focus areas: Roaring Like Lions, Instructionally Focused, Parent & Community Engagement, and Showcasing Student Talent and Skill.

Our Mission

Lorraine Elementary is a learning community where excellence is expected of all and students aspire to succeed. We ensure a strong academic foundation through a challenging curriculum, highly qualified staff, parent/teacher/student collaboration, and differentiated instruction.

Lorraine uses Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to teach, model, practice, and celebrate positive behaviors.

• Teach and Practice: Students learn what ROAR looks and sounds like.
• Positive Reinforcement: PBIS Rewards points and recognition for demonstrating ROAR.
• Celebrations: Pick of the Pride, the PBIS Store, pep rallies, and class-wide celebrations.
• Reteaching & Support: Staff reteach expectations and, when needed, apply consequences aligned with the RCPS Code of Conduct.

• Building Hours: 7:00 AM – 2:40 PM
• MORE After School: 2:15 PM – 6:00 PM
• Breakfast: Arrive by 7:15 AM; after 7:25 AM students receive Grab & Go.
• Notes for absences may be handwritten, emailed, or sent via ParentSquare.

Every Day Counts — regular attendance is the foundation of student success.

Please follow posted car rider procedures and arrive on time. Changes to dismissal should be sent via ParentSquare or written note to the teacher.

Our health clinic is staffed by trained personnel under the supervision of the RCPS Lead Nurse. All staff assisting in the clinic receive training in first aid, CPR, medication administration, and emergency procedures.

Students and families can Say Something by reporting concerns to a trusted adult or through the anonymous reporting system. Together we keep our Lions safe.

Lorraine has a full-service cafeteria offering breakfast and lunch daily. Thanks to a state grant, meals are provided at no charge this year.

Students engage in learning based on state standards. Gifted students remain at Lorraine one day each week for enrichment under the PC Lead Teacher with student-choice projects.

Mentoring assists students in developing and achieving goals for school success. All unsupervised volunteers must complete the RCPS volunteer approval process.
